Top Five Chevrolet Silverado Model Years of Innovation

2015-Chevrolet-SilveradoRallyEd-028

The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 has long been regarded as one of America’s most-trusted and dependable full-size pickup trucks. First launched in 1999, the Silverado 1500 has seen 22 model years come and go across four generations. Below are five model years that saw significant change and innovation that helped elevate the Silverado 1500 to new heights in the industry.

1.   2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

2006 saw the introduction of the Silverado Vortec Max with the trailering package—a high performance Silverado that wasn’t afraid to get down and dirty.

Why the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Is Great:

The Silverado Vortec Max featured a high-output 6.0L Vortec V8 under the hood rated at 345 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque. That was a hefty bump from the 4.8L and 5.3L available V8s in other Silverado trims that failed to eclipse the 300-horsepower mark.  With standard 4×4 and a larger heavy-duty 14-bolt rear end, the Vortec Max delivered an ear-to-ear grin unlike Silverado prior. Not only did it offer unmatched performance on the street, but it was also provided a higher tow rating for those that haul heavy loads.

How the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Is Different Than the 2005 Model Year:

Up until this point, the Silverado 1500 had merely been a work truck with little performance credibility. While it’s true that truck shoppers expect the highest level of capability from a truck that wears the Silverado nameplate, they also want something that packs a punch and is fun to drive too. The Silverado Vortec Max certainly delivers that in spades.

2.   2007 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

The second generation Silverado 1500 finally launched in 2007, closing the chapter on the first gen Silverado’s nine-year production run.

Why the 2007 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Is Great:

The second generation Silverado 1500 debuted on an all-new GMT900 platform with improved aerodynamics, powertrain options and fuel efficiency. The Silverado also received a new high-strength steel frame—improving the chassis rigidity by 92 percent. These changes led the Silverado to be named the North American Truck of the Year and Motor Trend’s Truck of the Year in 2007.

How the 2007 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Is Different Than the 2006 Model Year:

In 2007, the Generation IV small-block V8 engines debuted and replaced the Generation III units in the outgoing GMT800 series trucks (1999-2006). These updated engines featured active fuel management and performance tweaks that resulted in significantly more horsepower and fuel efficiency in both the 5.3L and 6.0L V8 engines.

3.   2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

The 2009 Silverado 1500 saw a new available high-performance 6.2L V8 engine join the model lineup.

Why the 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Is Great:

Now six years since the debut of the 2003 Silverado SS, Chevrolet had yet to develop a powertrain that resonated with enthusiasts like the 6.0L Vortec High-Output. That finally changed in 2009 when the massive Generation IV small-block 6.2L V8 launched in the Silverado LTZ.

How the 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Is Different Than the 2008 Model Year:

Up until 2009, the most powerful engine available in the Silverado was the 6.0L Vortec V8 rated at 367 horsepower and 375 lb-ft of torque. While power wasn’t necessarily lacking, the 6.2L V8 transformed highway entrance ramps into an amusement park ride with its 403 horsepower and 417 lb-ft of torque.

4.   2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

The 2014 Chevy Silverado showcased a newfound sense of luxury with an all-new lavish High Country trim.

Why the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Is Great:

The Silverado High Country debuted in 2014 as Chevrolet’s first premium truck that showcased unmatched luxury and refinement in the full-size truck segment. With its body-color front and rear bumpers, unique 20” chrome wheels and chrome grille with horizontal chrome bars, the Silverado High Country certainly portrayed an upscale appearance. The luxury continued inside as well, with an exclusive saddle brown interior, heated and cooled leather seating and standard Chevrolet MyLink with an eight-inch touchscreen.

How the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Is Different Than the 2013 Model Year

Now in its third generation of development, the Silverado had already proven exceptional durability and capability as an everyday work truck. However, the first 15 years of Silverado development were missing one key ingredient—a range-topping high-end luxury trim. That all changed in 2014 with the introduction of the Silverado High Country.

5.   2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Only one year after the Silverado was redesigned for the 2014 model year, the Silverado saw significant drivetrain changes that resulted in better performance and fuel-efficiency.

Why the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Is Great:

The 2015 Silverado 1500 arrived just one year removed from its transition to the third-generation K2XX platform. The 2015 Silverado utilizes more high-strength steel components to increase structural rigidity while prioritizing weight savings where it can—such as its aluminum hood, engine block and control arms.

How the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Is Different Than the 2014 Model Year:

The 2015 Silverado 1500 received a new eight-speed 8L90 automatic transmission that replaced the dated six-speed unit in the 2014 model year. With its closer gear-spacing and wider ratio spread, the 8L90 transmission provided faster acceleration and better fuel-efficiency by doing a much better job at keeping the Silverado’s engine in its optimum torque band.
